The Irish Tenors Phoenix Concert reviews
Competent Musical
Seeing the Broadway musical of the film is recommended for those familiar with it. At the Amsterdam, we saw it in a non-abbreviated form and suggest avoiding the stripped-down touring version. I didn't consider it "amazing" because I've witnessed better spectacle on Broadway. Despite the impressive few special effects, there was a minimal "wow" factor. I felt somewhat dismayed when considering the omitted movie scenes: dancing with penguins, racing hobby horses, floating tea party, and Poppins' initial arrival from the sky with her umbrella were replaced with a trap door appearance here. For instance, dancing statues replaced the penguins (not too original); a politically correct song-and-dance with a black Jamaican-type woman replaced laughing, floating Uncle Albert. Some great film scenes were either watered down or moved to the wrong place in the musical. "Feed the birds" lacked any birds and featured only cartoon bird shadows on the screen with the kids pretending to throw invisible bread crumbs to invisible birds, reminiscent of a high school production. The emotional impact of "let's fly a kite" was diminished by being stuck in the middle of the play instead of closing the show as it should have. The scene where Mr. Banks complains to Poppins about wanting his kids to lead a well-ordered life, followed by Poppins' suggestion that he take them to work with him, was completely omitted - Poppins just shows up with the kids at the bank without any reason. Nevertheless, it is hard to keep a good premise down, and perhaps it is more accurate to say that the musical failed to completely destroy the original film concept than to say it enhanced it in any way. Overall, it was like an old friend after a long separation - worth it, but memories no longer accurately reflect the changes undergone during the hiatus.
